Netflix Shuts Down Gaming Studio Behind Squid Game Title Amid Strategic Shift
Netflix has shuttered Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio responsible for its hit mobile game Squid Game: Unleashed, marking a surprising pivot in its gaming strategy. The closure comes despite the title's commercial success, with over 10 million downloads on Google Play and chart-topping performance in 107 countries.
The MOVE signals a broader shift in Netflix's gaming division away from mobile experiences toward TV-based interactive entertainment. Co-CEO Greg Peters had recently cited Squid Game: Unleashed as exemplary of the company's narrative gaming ambitions during an earnings call, making the studio's abrupt closure particularly notable.
Boss Fight Entertainment, acquired by Netflix in March 2022, had been instrumental in developing story-driven games based on popular Netflix IPs including Love Is Blind and Emily in Paris. The studio's shutdown suggests a recalibration of Netflix's gaming investments as it refocuses on different platforms and formats.
